General information

ITMO University invites you to take part in the Summer School on Topological Photonics for PhD, Master students, engineers, postdocs and researchers.

Topological photonics is a new fast-growing branch of modern optics. It features an exciting physics and fascinating applications, especially in disorder-robust and non-reciprocal devices, which promise to introduce novel fundamental concepts in photonics and optoelectronics in the nearest future.
The world's best experts will give lectures grouped into a 5-day course on topological photonics. The course will start from the fundamentals and will cover the latest achievements as well. The practical classes will help you to get the skills necessary for conducting your own scientific research in this new exciting area of physics.

The School is organized by the Research Center of Nanophotonics and Metamaterials of ITMO University. This year the School will be held within the scope of the IV International Conference on Metamaterials and Nanophotonics "METANANO 2019".

Self-study

Please download the file with the description of the problem using the links below and start solving them in a groups according to the following table. You will be provided a self-study time on Thursday. During the self-study time you will be able to use a class room with computers with required software. The results should be presented by each group on Friday during the "Exam" session.

Registration and Travel grants

Selection of the School participants is made on the basis of applicant’s CV and motivation letter. All registered participants are encouraged to attend Poster Session competition. The best poster will be awarded. Travel grants will be offered for selected students after consideration of requests. Please fill in corresponding field during registration.

Student 280 EUR

Credits

All participants of the School will be offered to solve a number of problems given by lecturers. Students who will successfully solve all tasks and present their results will be awarded 3 ECTS.

The conference venue is ITMO University located at Birzhevaya line 14, Vasilyevsky Island, St. Petersburg.




Visa

Please fill in visa invitation form in order to get official invitation for visa application.

A foreign citizen traveling to Russia should have a valid passport (expiry date should be no earlier than 6 months after the date of departure from Russia) and a visa (for almost all foreign visitors, please see the details below).
The deadline for the visa support from the school organizers is April 30, 2019.


The visa application rules are different depending on the citizenship of the applicant:

I. VISA-FREE

For citizens of the following countries: Abkhazia, Azerbaijan, Argentina, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Venezuela, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Colombia, Cuba, Moldova, Nicaragua, Peru, Serbia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Uruguay, Montenegro, Chile, South Korea no visa is needed.
Nevertheless, we kindly ask you to contact the Organizing Committee to receive a letter from METANANO 2019 organizers confirming the purpose of your visit to Russia (you might be asked at the Russian customs).


II.VISA NEEDED

Each participant will receive a visa invitation letter, in printable format, via e-mail if he/she ticks this option in the application form and fills in the the visa invitation letter application form (will be available after the results of acceptance are announced on March 31, 2019).
EU-citizens (except for citizens of the UK and Ireland) has to submit to a Russian Embassy or Consulate a visa invitation letter issued by ITMO University that takes about 5-10 working days to process.
NON-EU citizens (and citizens of the UK and Ireland) has to submit to a Russian Embassy or Consulate a visa invitation letter issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs that takes about 25-30 working days to process.

If you require the original invitation to obtain the visa (e.g. citizens of China and Japan), we will be mailing it via courier post.

Please, apply for a visa as soon as possible after receiving the invitation letter to ensure that the visa is issued timely and also check that you have a valid medical insurance.
